Planning Department – Boards and Commissions

Note: Videos referenced below are reflective of a time when Boards and Commissions meetings were held virtually (Summer 2020-Summer 2021). Beginning Summer 2021, all Boards and Commissions moved back to meeting in-person. 

 

The Planning Department has the privilege to support the City Council, as well as the:

  • Historic and Architectural Review Commission (HARC)
  • Housing Advisory Board
  • Planning and Zoning Commission (P&Z)
  • Unified Development Code Advisory Committee (UDCAC) and
  • Zoning Board of Adjustment (ZBA)

Note: Written comments for the Planning and Zoning Commission meetings may be sent to City of Georgetown Planning Department, P. O. Box 409, Georgetown, Texas 78627. Emailed comments may be sent to planning@georgetown.org. Any such comments may be presented to the Commission.

Note: the deadline to submit public comment is the Thursday, prior to the posted Planning and Zoning meeting, and Tuesday prior to the posted Council Meeting, by 5pm.

Comments received after this timeframe will still be included in the tally count, however, will not be included in the staff report for this agenda item. Meets on the second and fourth Thursday of each month
HARC reviews projects within the Downtown and Old Town Historic Overlay Districts for compliance with the approval criteria, including the Design Guidelines. HARC reviews new commercial and residential projects in the Downtown and Old Town Districts, additions and alterations to historic structures within the districts, and demolition requests for historic structures. In some cases HARC reviews new signage within the Downtown and Old Town Districts. The Commission issues a Certificate of Appropriateness for approved projects that are consistent with the Downtown Design Guidelines.

Housing Advisory Board

Meets on the third Monday of each month
The Housing Advisory Board works to ensure that the City has affordable housing for residents of all income levels. The Board is responsible for providing long-range housing research and policy recommendations with the housing element of the City’s comprehensive plan. The Board is also responsible for reviewing and making recommendations regarding housing developments that request City support for state and federal funding.

Planning and Zoning Commission

Meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month
The Planning and Zoning Commission reviews various types of development related applications and provides recommendations to the Council. The applications cover future land uses planned for the City, zoning of properties to determine current land uses and development standards, the subdivision of properties and many more. This Commission consists of seven regular members and five alternates.

Unified Development Code Advisory Committee (UDCAC)

Meets on the second Wednesday of each month
The Unified Development Code Advisory Committee (UDCAC) reviews proposed or requested amendments to the Unified Development Code (the UDC) other than executive amendments which are those amendments that are non-discretionary, mandatory, or legislative revisions necessary to address state statutes or case laws, ratify published director interpretations, incorporate recently approved Council ordinances, process City Council designated emergency items, or address revisions otherwise determined necessary by legal counsel. The UDCAC also makes recommendations and advises the Planning and Zoning Commission and the City Council on the proposed amendments to the UDC, provides an additional forum for public participation and input regarding proposed amendments to the UDC, and assists the general public in understanding the proposed amendments to the UDC.

Zoning Board of Adjustment

Meets on the third Tuesday of each month
The Zoning Board of Adjustment is a board appointed to hear and grant requests for Variances from the zoning standards of the Unified Development Code (UDC). This Board also makes decisions regarding requests for Special Exceptions from the UDC standards and considers applicants Appeals of Administrative Decisions. This is a quasi-judicial board and any appeal of its decision must be taken to a court of law.
